The following rules apply to all member sections on faneditforum.com and fanedit.org:

1. Be nice:
Good behavior is of the essence for our community. If you have something bad to say or need to complain or feel treated badly, try and put your thoughts into constructive and positive words. It works. You will see that people will not start arguments with you so easily and that the overall mood in the community is for the better.

We do not tolerate bad behavior at all. You may receive a warning, your posts might get deleted and in worse and repeating cases you may get even banned. Think first, write then. Use the preview function before you submit a post and re-read again, what you wrote. The internet is full of strange attitude people, but never forget (even though politically incorrect, but not meant as an insult to handicapped people, only as a metaphor: "Arguing on the internet is like winning the paralympics: you win, but you are still retarded."

If you do have a serious problem and are unsure of the consequences, contact a staff member via private message (pm) first.

If you have been contacted by a staff member, try not to be stubborn. Discussion is good, if it gets to a result.

2. No download links to full fanedits:
do not post links to full fanedits in your posts. We will delete them right ahead and you will get a warning for that.
You can mention the websites, where a fanedit is available (e.G.: available on Piratebay).
If you have links to share, please send them via pm to a staff member.

3. Don't post to ask for download links:
we will delete all link request right ahead and you will in repeating cases get a warning.
Posts like "where can I find this?" will also be deleted, as this is already answered on fanedit.org and the forum in the respective fanedit posts.
Keep requests for releases on different platforms to a minimum.

4. Ratings on fanedit.org:
We consider low ratings without an explaining comment as an insult to the faneditor's hard work. If you feel, a fanedit deserves a bad rating, have the courage to explain yourself. Otherwise your rating will get deleted and you warned and in repeating cases your account and ip address banned.
This rule is meant as a protection of the hard work of the faneditors.

5. No nudity:
We are a PG 13 forum. No images nor direct links of nudity, please. The internet is full of that anyway.

6. Make constructive posts:
Contribution is good, but it needs to be constructive. If you post, please try and make it count. Posts consisting of nothing, but "thank you" or "I am looking forward to this." or alikes, should be kept to a minimum. If you post rubbish like that continuously, you are spamming the forum and will get warned for that and in repeating cases maybe even banned.
We tolerate a lot here, but there are limits.

7. Language:
Mind your language and try to not insult minorities (there are a few sections in the off topic, where strong language is allowed though).
Use proper English. We have lots of foreigners in our community and that is good. But please try to correct your spelling mistakes and use proper sentences as well as you can.

8. downloading illegal things:
We do not allow any mentioning of illegal downloads. This is also true for all kinds of preservations. It is not allowed to even mention that they are available, let alone where to get them.

9. posting fanedits:
Completed fanedits have to be posted with the full FE info (--> http://fanedit.org/faneditor-entry/). Releases without this will not be allowed in the available sections and will also not be posted on fanedit.org.

10. file hosting availability required:
We want the fanedits to be available. Torrents are unreliable as they require seeding. A fanedit must be available on a file hosting service (Rapidshare, Megaupload, etc). Fanedits only available as torrents will no longer be allowed.

11. original requiredl
An original source must be available, fanedit has to be created from original source. Fanedits must not be created from illegal sources.

...to be continued.

added rule #9 and #10.
to #9: It is a P.I.T.A. for the staff to write a detailed info about a fanedit from the little fragments given from the ideas and ITW threads (if there is any that is). Therefor we now make it a rule to include the FE info. It's not much work for the faneditor and history shows that a detailed and well written info gains a lot more attention than some sloppy basic release info.

to #10: a tough one, yes, but also solving a big problem about the true availability of fanedits. Fanedit.org is about AVAILABLE fanedits (unlike fanedits.com, which lists whatever, even if it was never available). Torrents are unreliable and the staff is sick and tired of the unavailability complaints by the audience. So, first upload your fanedit to a file hosting service and THEN start a torrent. Or contact one of our uploaders (or staff members to give you information, who to send it to for uploading).

All this sounds good to me.

I wonder about one thing, though. I'm a bit surprised to see that a positive comment like "thank you!" or "looking forward to this!" is considered spam. I've seen faneditors here having no idea whether or not anyone apart from the two or three people taking an active interest (through longer comments) are actually interested in the finished product. And in some cases it seems the actual interest in a finished edit takes the editor by surprise. Isn't it possible to view shorter comments as a way of gauging advance interest from viewers who aren't familiar enough with the source material to post longer, substantial comments? That's been my thinking with a couple of my "way to go", "good idea" and "looking forward to this" posts. That way the editor will know people are interested. Yes, the threads will get longer and there's more to sift through, so I can see why the rule is there. Just saying that a short pat-on-the-back comment can be a good thing too. (Though I guess the fact that I'm not banned means the rule is somewhat flexible.)

I agree with all the other strict rules, especially the part about explaining bad ratings. That's a very good idea. And of course being a n00b and just a viewer, not an editor, there's no earthly reason why you should listen to me. :)

thanks for your input, theslime.
rule #6 is not forbidding the short posts, it's about trying to reduce them. Some users are posting nothing else, but that. 2 or 3 "nice idea" posts in a row for one fanedit discussion also look bad.
This rule is a reminder to contribute rather than just post for posting.

This is probably part of the "proper english" rule but what about internet speak? It's really annoying and quite juvenile.

I did not know it was necessary to have this as a rule... but now we have it.
Rule no.11 added: original required.

Isn't that kind of a "No Duh" rule? :-P

Was that there before? I just assumed it meant "more rules to come as necessary."

Ah! Perhaps you are right; it's been a long time since I read the rules. I'm still interested in what prompted the new rule all the same.

hehe, several guys lately contacted me, who made fanedits from stolen sources. They were pretty rude about being not allowed in so it was a good idea to clarify on that again.

an example:
Quote:
Stop harassing me by reminding me about your stupidity, moron.
Go tell Shakespear that he didn't return a borrowed quill that he wrote
Hamlet with.

Speaking as quite possibly the only professional Shakespearean on here, I'm a) vaguely impressed that the author of this post (possibly without knowing it) chose one of the more popular variant spellings of Shax's name from his own time and b) equally impressed by the failure of the analogy.

The quill, if any, had very little to do with the writing of the play, where the source files probably contain lots of visuals, music, and words from which our auteur made his edit.

A much better example, if he really wanted to support his point, would have been that Shakespeare took almost all of his plots, including Hamlet, from other sources, and some of his plays may have been rewritten versions of earlier plays. He was himself a faneditor, in a way, or at least a mashup artist. And BTW, a lot of his works were later stolen from his company in very imperfect form by rival theatre companies and unscrupulous publishers. So he knew both sides of piracy...

More than that, though, do I really need to point out that borrowing and stealing aren't the same?

Am I a saint? No; of course not, and I don't know many people who are when it comes to downloading stuff. But even beyond the ethical considerations for a fanedit, using an original source just makes sense because the quality will be better. To get back to his original analogy, who cares where the quill came from if the ink he writes with is all runny?

Since this is the rules section, perhaps someone can answer my question about how moderators approval of posts works. This is the closest forum for this type of question that I see.

I have submitted two recent posts to my thread and so far either they have not been approved or they got lost in the system. One I posted yesterday, and one today. I am kinda of glad the first one didnt go through because I accidentally replied to the wrong person.. But I reposted today in more detail to the right person.

Why is it taking so long to post my message? Is it possible the message was denied and I am not being told or is approval of messages just that slow?

Also, I notice my create private message is grayed out. I would have PM'd a mod with these questions but it seems I cannot. Why cant I create a private message?

Hello DarkPhoenix.

The normal procedure on FE has been to NOT require approval of new users' posts. We subscribe to an everybody be nice philosophy, and until you prove yourself to not be so, we let everyone start posting right away. Recently we did however make an adjustment to the automated process for registering accounts which inadvertently activated the moderate feature which requires first posts be approved, which unfortunately means we are not in the habit of looking for posts to approve. As we work to undo this feature, we will do our best to keep people approved as quickly as possible.

And welcome to the forum!

from what I think: absolutely not!
An official DVD could be understood as some kind of payment, but fanedits are and have to be free. Sell your DVDs on ebay.

Agreed, Boon. Fanedits are free (and only allowed to those who own the source material), so should not be used as any sort of bartering tool.

If you sell your DVD's on Ebay, Amazon or at a local used DVD shop, you can use the money to buy the source material for the edits that you want (use the Amazon widget on the fanedit page if possible :) ) and to pay for any shipping charges involved with a fanedit trade.
